The Three sisters May Bundle

The bundle we’ve decided on this month is the 3 sisters bundle with mixed sunflowers and Russian Scorzonera thrown in for good measure; Scorzonera being a perennial root crop- survival food that requires minimal effort once its it. 

Golden Bantam Sweet corn, Lazy house wife beans and Spaghetti Squash, all complimenting each others growing.- Companion plants..

 Corn, beans and squash were traditionally grown together as main agricultural crops by indigenous peoples of Central and North America. Sunflowers were added on the north edges of their gardens like a"fourth sister”. The birds and the bees will love you for it! 

The maize and beans are planted together in mounds and around the base of the plants grow the squash .The corns makes for a trellis for the climbing beans. The beans are nitrogen fixing via nodules under ground and apparently that helps to stabalize the corn crop in high winds. The wide leaves of the squash plant shade the ground acting as a living mulch keeping the soil moist and help to slow down the weeds.
