Collection: Cape Gooseberry and Tomatillo
The Cape Gooseberry Physalis edulis and Tomatillo Physalis philadelphica are related species, originally from South America, in the same family as the tomato. They resemble tomatoes in culture, needing a greenhouse or at least a pretty good summer outside. The ripe fruit of the Cape Gooseberrry is sweet and tart, excellent with dark chocolate. The Tomatillo is not sweet but its tart flavour adds zing to salsas and chutneys.
